Crosby Area TX History
Crosby Area has an interesting history dating back to the 1800s. Originally, there was an encampment called Lick Skillet in the area, named after East Texas drivers who drank spring water and cleaned their cooking skillets. Humphrey Jackson, one of the early settlers, built a cabin in the region and was granted land that is now Harris County.
In the 1860s, they built a 41-mile railroad and a station in town. From there, different establishments were built. The town was named Gentry after a railroad company president, and it became a bustling center for lumber and agricultural products.
However, it was renamed Crosby Area in 1877 by Judge Josiah Crosby, and the town's population started to grow.
In an amusing twist, the town temporarily changed its name to Hope in 1953 to participate in a contest by comedian Bob Hope. It returned to its original name after 19 days.
Today, The people still regard Crosby Area for its long history and preserve it through an organization and the museums found in the area.
