North of Porter is where New Caney is now located. It is where the first community in east Montgomery County started to take development. In the 1870s, people relocated to the area when the railroad was completed. James Porter, who managed a sawmill, was among the community’s early residents. The name Porter was given to the region by the post office in 1953.
