Fifth Ward Real Estate Guide

The Fifth Ward is one of Houston's historic six wards, located just inside the city's inner loop. Famous for its rich culture, the neighborhood is only minutes away from Downtown Houston, the Medical Center area, and the Houston Heights.

The Fifth Ward is known for its:

The Fifth Ward (parts of which are within Denver Harbor and Northside) is mostly made up of single-family homes. Homes in the area range from vintage homes from the 1920s to Contemporary/Modern new-construction homes. Given its excellent location, the Fifth Ward has attracted a surge of new builders with proposed townhouses. This rapid growth can make it challenging to navigate through 5th Ward real estate.

“My wife and I had the pleasure to work with Brad Evans when we bought our house in Cypress Tx about 5 years ago. I have relocated 16 times around the US and I am telling you I have never had a realitor like Brad. For starters he actively listened to us really trying to find out the most important thing? What is going to make my wife happy for the long term. Second one we closed and this is my experience the agent moves on not Brad, he once or twice a year checks in “how’s the home? How’s Linda? How’s work?. Last year my wife wanted to remodel the bathroom who was my first call to? Brad, asking is he knew any good contractors? Within 2 days I had a list of qualified contractors. I could go on and on about Brad! One last thing Brad is no longer just the guy who helped us buy our house me and my wife consider Brad a friend! Anytime someone ask about an agent Brad is my go to guy!” - Marc Scott (Google Review)

Fifth Ward TX History

Houston's Fifth Ward was one of its original six wards. It was barely lived in before the Civil War but freedmen eventually settled in. In 1866, it became known as the Fifth Ward after an alderman was elected to represent their community in the city government.

By the 1880s, the ward experienced rapid development with the newly built Southern Pacific Railroad. However, the fires of 1891 and 1912 that affected homes, oil tanks, plants, and a school halted economic growth.

In the 1920s, businesses boomed in the community. Residents typically worked for either the Houston Ship Channel or the Southern Pacific Railroad. The economic development drove well into the 1930s, with more businesses opening, such as printing plants and photography studios. The Fifth Ward Civic Club was formed during this period.

The Fifth Ward had notable growth in both housing and commerce after the 1990s. With the 1989 establishment of the Fifth Ward Community Redevelopment Corporation (CRC), the area underwent significant changes. They pioneered new home construction, increased focus on job training, and gave more access to technology and the arts.
