Fort Bend South / Richmond TX History

The history of Fort Bend South/Richmond begins with Robert Eden Handy and William Lusk. They were the first residents who established the town in 1837 and sold parcels there.

Richmond, named after a town in England, became one of the cities of the Republic of Texas. It assumed the role of Fort Bend County's center of government in the same year.

In 1855, the Buffalo Bayou, Brazos, and Colorado Railway (BBB&C) spread tracks through the city. This led to the city's flourishing economy based on sugar, cotton, and cattle shipping. In the mid-1930s, the area transitioned from agriculture (a primary industry) to oil production.

People started moving to Richmond in the 1940s, and this migration continued well into the 1980s. Today, some new master-planned construction developments are within the city's boundaries and ETJ. Richmond Trail stands as one of the community-wide improvements in Richmond.

Today, Fort Bend South / Richmond is home to many historic homes. These homes include the Long-Smith Cottage (1937), John M. Moore's 1993 home, and the McNabb House (built in the 1850s).
