Humble Area West TX History
Humble Area West is part of the greater Humble suburbs of Houston, thus sharing a history.
Humble's history dates back to Joseph Dunman, its first settler. Pleasant Smith Humble, the area's namesake, bought land along the San Jacinto River and ran a ferry.
Later, he established a post office and became a justice of the peace. C.O. Bender's sawmill thrived, and the town prospered in the lumber trade. The oil discovery attracted people, leading to rapid growth and the formation of the Humble Oil and Refining Company (now Exxon).
After the oil boom, agriculture and lumbering prevailed. The town incorporated and adopted a council-manager government. Construction of the Eastex Freeway and the Houston Intercontinental Airport aided later growth.
