Imperial at Sugar Land TX History
The history of Imperial at Sugar Land, TX can be traced back to the early 1800s, when the area was first settled by sugarcane farmers. In 1843, the Williams brothers built a commercial sugar mill on their Oakland Plantation, which is now the original Sugar Land. The mill became the birthplace of the new Imperial Sugar Company.
In 1879, Littleberry Ambrose Ellis built a new 600-ton raw sugar mill on his land about a mile west of the Sugar Land mill. He named the mill “Imperial.” Just a year later, the partnership dissolved with Ellis retaining his original 5,300 acres and the Imperial Mill. He moved to Austin and turned the operation of the plantation over to his two sons, W. O. (Will) Ellis and C. G. Ellis.
The Imperial Sugar Company continued to grow and prosper in the years that followed. In 1903, the company built a new refinery in Sugar Land, which was one of the largest and most modern sugar refineries in the world. The refinery helped to transform Sugar Land into a thriving industrial town.
The Imperial Sugar Company remained in operation for over 160 years, until it closed in 2003. The closure of the company was a major blow to the economy of Sugar Land, but the city has since rebounded and is now a thriving suburb of Houston.
The site of the former Imperial Sugar Company is now being redeveloped as a mixed-use community called Imperial at Sugar Land. The community will include homes, apartments, businesses, and parks. It is expected to be a major economic driver for Sugar Land in the years to come.
