Lake Jackson TX History
The history of Lake Jackson can be traced back to the early 1840s. Abner Jackson, a wealthy Virginia planter, purchased a 3,750-acre plantation on the Brazos River. Jackson built a palatial home on the plantation, which he named Lake Jackson. The plantation was successful, producing cotton, sugar, and corn.
After Jackson's death in 1861, the plantation was sold to a series of owners. The plantation declined during the Civil War and Reconstruction.
In 1942, the Dow Chemical Company purchased the Lake Jackson plantation to build a new plant. Dow also developed a planned community for its employees, which became the city of Lake Jackson.
Lake Jackson was incorporated as a city in 1944. The city grew rapidly in the following decades, as Dow expanded its operations in the area.
