Medical Center South TX History
In 1945, the Texas Medical Center was established thanks to the M.D. The Anderson Foundation. To prevent the dissolution of Anderson's partnership, he started the foundation.
In 1937, Anderson put an initial $300,000 into the foundation. He left $19 million in his estate. By 1941, this foundation had provided funding and support to the cancer research facility at the University of Texas.
As time went on, developments happened at the center. This gave rise to the Texas Children's Hospital and Houston Methodist Hospital. The expansion and renovation of the Medical Center Area started with the Cancer Center's project.
Today, the Medical Center has 21 hospitals. It includes different medical schools, academic and research institutions, and other health-related organizations. There is a south branch of this site called the Medical Center South.
As the Medical Center Area grew in size, so did its surroundings. The Texas Medical Center (TMC) is filled with different communities.
Now, there are condominiums, townhomes, and single-family homes in the Medical Center Area. More townhouses and single-family homes are in the Medical Center South. These residential places cater to workers, students, and patients in the healthcare district.
