In 1836, the Allen brothers purchased over 6,600 acres on the banks of Buffalo Bayou.

Houston became the capital of the Republic from 1837 to 1839.

In 1846, Texas became the 28th state. Houston's first railroad began its operation in 1853.

Commerce continued to grow in the 1860s, and Houston's first bank was founded by 1866.
