Preston Place TX History
The area of what was known as Preston Place was first developed in 1917 as part of West University Place. Former Tennessee governor Ben Hooper led the development. The city got its name from the adjacent Rice University.
Preston Place residents and others from neighboring areas refused to consolidate to the larger and expanding Houston in 1939.
They adopted a city charter one year later, with the area now known as Preston Place joining West University Place as one of its 26 neighborhoods.
