Santa Fe TX History
In 1975, Hitchcock considered annexing a three-square-mile area bordering Alta Loma. The residents were concerned about their way of life being disrupted. A meeting was held, and Hitchcock assured the crowd that annexation was only being discussed. The residents feared losing control over their area.
After a protest, Hitchcock delayed the annexation proposal, giving Alta Loma/Arcadia residents time to develop a plan. The threat of annexation remained, so residents had to choose between incorporating as a city. Another option is to be annexed by other cities in Galveston County.
The residents of Alta Loma and Arcadia decided to come together. They attended workshops and meetings to determine their future. On July 8, 1975, a panel discussed the requirements and guidelines for incorporation, and the decision was made to name the new city Santa Fe.
A town meeting was held on November 6, 1976, to discuss various aspects of managing the city. In October 1977, Hitchcock moved forward with annexation plans. However, a petition from residents caused them to hesitate temporarily. The residents recognized the importance of incorporation and took the necessary steps to establish the new city.
On January 21, 1978, Santa Fe was born as a result of a vote by the residents. The city's establishment derailed Hitchcock's annexation attempt.
Through workshops and preparations, Santa Fe became a reality, allowing the residents to shape their own future.
