South Houston TX History
C. S. Woods founded South Houston year 1907 as Dumont. It was later incorporated as South Houston in 1913 with Walter Tharp as the first mayor. The town thrived with truck farms. Meanwhile, the Houston Ship Channel's growth in the early 20th century.
During the 1940s to the 1960s, South Houston experienced rapid growth. Led by George Christy, a circus owner who served as the mayor during that period. The city attracted various industries and had a population of 7,523 by 1960. In 1980, it reported 11,782 residents and 303 businesses.
Today, South Houston boasts municipal recreation facilities, fire-fighting equipment, and a library. Notable nearby attractions comprise Hobby Airport, the San Jacinto Battleground, and the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center.
