Sugar Land West TX History


Samuel M. Williams and his brother Nathaniel first settled in the area. The area was formerly known as "Oakland Plantation," after the wide variety of oaks that dotted the land. The Williams brothers established a plantation. Their main products are corn, cotton, and sugarcane.

In 1853, Colonel E. H. Cunningham bought the plantation. He built a job-generating sugar refining plant. The town was also built along with the plant.

Isaac H. Kempner and William T. Eldridge purchased the Ellis Plantation. It covers 5,300 acres next to the Cunningham Plantation. In 1908, the partners later bought the Cunningham Plantation. The acquisition led to the creation of the Imperial Sugar Company. Sugar Land got its name from the plantation.

From the 1910s to the late 1950s, Sugar Land and Sugar Land West was a company town. The area encompasses employee housing, schools, and a hospital. Retail and entertainment establishments also emerged during this time.

The form of government in Sugar Land City has changed to council-manager. Several master-planned communities have been annexed into Sugar Land, including those that are in Sugar Land West.
