Trinity Area TX History
Trinity was established in the winter of 1872–73. It was originally called Trinity Station, named after the nearby Trinity River. It became the county seat on May 20, 1873. This attracted residents after the Houston and Great Northern Railroad bypassed Sumpter.
It lost its county seat in 1874. But, Trinity stayed a major railroad center and the region's largest town. It boasted various amenities, including stores, saloons, churches, schools, sawmills, and cotton gins.
Over time, Trinity saw population changes. Fires in the late 19th and early 20th centuries caused setbacks. Still, it persevered. It incorporated in 1910 and again in 1916 after fires devastated its downtown.
It was a vital transportation hub for the East Texas lumber industry. It had many sawmills and lots of railroad tracks.
Today, Trinity is a vibrant community. It has many churches, civic groups, and outdoor fun. This includes Lake Livingston and national forests.
