Pinehurst's earliest reference dates back to 1860. It was when a post office was established under the name Prairie Home.

In 1904, the city was renamed Pinehurst.

Pinehurst had 290 residents and ten companies in 1980. In 1993, it reached 3,301, and the town had 62 companies. There were 4,266 people residing in 2000, and it has been steadily increasing ever since.
